Virginia Beach, Va. - Members of the Maury High School football team are in mourning after their beloved volunteer, 36-year-old Stewart Carlton Crews, Jr. passed away.

He was hit by a vehicle Tuesday night in the 3200 block of Holland Road.

Police say Crews stepped into traffic and that's when the accident occurred. The driver is not facing any charges.

He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

"His life was cut short so so early," said Dolly Gray-Crews, his mom. "I don't know where to go from here it's going to be such a big loss."

Crews served as a volunteer for more than a decade.

“Carlton Crews has been a fixture on the Maury Football sideline for the past eleven years as the team’s waterboy. He never missed a practice or a game, and he will be greatly missed by the players and coaches who have known him over the years," says Maury Athletic Director Edward Boyd.

Kameron Chancellor with the Seattle Seahawks created a special tribute for Crews.

RIP to my man Carlton. Worked with the team in High School. Hardest worker on the field, he was a loyal friend. He always brought a good spirit to practice, wether he was joking you, dancing, or telling stories. The most special people are the ones who are different. They understand the real meaning of life. Prayers to his Family and everyone who knew him. My teammate Carlton!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
