Virginia State Police investigating crash landing of plane involving student pilot from Chesapeake

Lynchburg, Va. – Virginia State Police say they are continuing to investigate the crash landing of a single-engine Piper Super Cub airplane that occurred just before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening in Campbell County.

The plane reportedly crashed into a wooded area in the 6200 block of Brookneal Highway.

The student pilot has been identified as 22-year-old Jonathan K. Bass of Chesapeake. He received minor injuries in the crash.

The instructor was identified as 52-year-old Bruce Barnhart. He was not injured.

Both were able to escape the plane after the crash and walk to a nearby residence for assistance.

The airplane is still lodged in the trees. The FAA has responded to the scene.
