Man accused of accidentally shooting himself with stolen gun, lying to police

Newport News, Va. – A man has been charged after police say he accidentally shot himself with a stolen gun and tried to tell police he was the victim of a robbery.

On Monday, February 2nd, police were called out to the hospital about a man who had been shot.

He allegedly told police he was in the area of Warwick Blvd. and Deloice Cresent.

When police started to investigate, he admitted to lying about the robbery and the shooting.

He says he accidentally shot himself while playing with a handgun and he told them where it happened which was in the 400 block of Catina Way.

That’s where police say they found the weapon.

The weapon had been reported stolen in Hampton and Breaun Lauren, the 20-year-old man involved, was charged with filing a false police report, and reckless handling of a firearm, discharging a firearm within city limits/dwelling.

He was arrested on February 6th at 3:45 p.m.
