Exmore, Va. - Exmore Police are investigating a homicide that took place over the weekend, according to Chief Angelo DiMartino of the Exmore Police Department.
On Friday, Feb. 6 at around 8:15 p.m., a group of people were at a home located at 3328 Frederick Douglas Road in Exmore.
The group was in a shed in the backyard playing cards, according to police. Approximately nine people were in the shed at the time. The group would often gather together in that location to "routinely play cards", police tell NewsChannel 3.
A suspect entered the backyard, and fired shots through a side window of the shed, according to police. One occupant, identified as 26-year-old Terrell Mason of Exmore, was struck by a gunshot.
Mason was transported to a local hospital in a personal vehicle. He was later pronounced dead by hospital personnel. He leaves behind eight children. Many of them are not old enough to understand what is going on with their family, but his oldest daughter is learning a big lesson at a very young age.
"It is very mean because I care about my daddy and if that was their family member they would be sad too," said 7-year-old Tiajhe.
While the family is trying to cope with their loss, they are also trying to get answers.
"There are just some many questions running through my head why – why someone that we all knew that we all love that’s not cool at all," said Taquan Brisco, a cousin of Mason.
Police are not releasing any motive or suspect information, however, they say they are following up on some leads.
The family held a vigil over the weekend to celebrate Mason's life they have also set up a Facebook page in his memory.
