UPDATE: Two face multiple charges after police chase through Hampton, Newport News and James City County

Hampton, Va. - A man and woman face multiple charges after a police chase that began as a shoplifting case at the Walmart on Cunningham Drive on Tuesday.

Police were initially notified of the shoplifting at 3:46pm, and were told as they arrived that 28-year-old Courtney Kaye Clark and 32-year-old Shawn Gregory Formen were loading stolen merchandise into a 2014 Chevy SUV in the parking lot.

As police tried to speak with the pair, Clark allegedly put the SUV in reverse and nearly struck one of the officers.

The officers ran back to their vehicles and tried to stop the SUV, which fled through Hampton and Newport News before getting onto I-64 West, where State Police joined the chase.

The pursuit continued into James City County where the SUV struck a red Chevy pickup truck as it tried to exit onto Rt. 143.

The driver of the pickup was not injured in the crash, and Clark and Formen were taken into custody.

Police found stolen merchandise from Walmart and an undisclosed amount of suspected cocaine and marijuana inside of the SUV.

Clark was charged with one count of Attempt Maiming of a Law Enforcement Officer, one count of Felony Evade and Elude, one count of Possession of Stolen Property and one count of Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Distribute.

Formen  was charged with Possession of Stolen Property and Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Distribute.

Both remain in custody at the Hampton City Jail.
