UPDATE: CNU determines person reportedly seen with ‘handgun’ was actually employee carrying broken equipment

UPDATE - The investigation has now concluded and officials have determined that the person who was thought to have been seen carrying a gun was actually an employee who was carrying a broken piece of equipment. 

"We are happy to report that there was no one carrying a handgun on our campus," officials said in an alert. 

Newport News, Virginia - Christopher Newport University has received two reports of a person walking across campus holding a gun, according to a CNU Alert released by the university.

The campus has been put on lockdown. Classes that are scheduled for 8 a.m. have been cancelled, according to the school alert system, but will resume at 9 a.m., pending an "all clear" message from officials.

The person is described as a black male, 5'8", wearing a tan jacket and a knit cap.

CNU police and Newport News police have not located this person.

All CNU students, faculty and staff should remain inside until further notice.
