Portsmouth, Va. - The Coast Guard medevaced a sick captain from a ship off the Virginia Beach coast Friday afternoon.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth received a report Friday morning from the 545-foot U.S. freighter Energy Enterprise.

The report said the captain was suffering from abdominal pain.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, at about noon.

The aircrew arrived on scene, hoisted the man and took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk where he is reported to be stable.

Energy Enterprise is currently anchored off Virginia Beach. A relief captain is scheduled to go aboard tomorrow.
