Newport News, Va. – Fire crews arrived on the scene of a fire around 9:28 p.m. Sunday night and found smoke showing from the two story apartment, officials tell NewsChannel 3.

Eight individuals, including two teenagers, escaped the fire before fire crews arrived, and sustained no injuries. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced individuals.

An electrical short in an outlet in the laundry room has been determined to be the cause of the fire. The fire spread to the attic and caused moderate damage. The fire was under control within 30 minutes, officials say.

According to Newport News dispatch, around 9:23 p.m. fire crews responded to the house fire at the Waypoint Apartment Complex off of Lucas Creek Road.
