(CNN) -- A U.S. Navy SEAL was killed in a parachute accident in Perris, California, near Riverside, a U.S. Navy official tells CNN.
Initial indications are the parachute failed to open during a parachute jump as part of a training exercise. The sailor was part of a West Coast-based Navy SEAL team based in Coronado, California.
According to KTLA, the victim was found along a riverbed. The site is several miles from Skydive Perris, which operates out of the Perris Valley Airport.
Notification of next of kin is underway, after which the Navy will release his name.
