One charged in early March accident involving an HRT bus in Newport News

UPDATE: The driver of the Kia Rio, 20-year-old Megan Elizabeth Donahue, has been charged with Reckless Driving in connection with this crash. The passenger in the Honda Accord, a 70-year-old Newport News woman, remains in the hospital. Her condition has not been released at the request of the family. 

Newport News, Va. – A three-vehicle accident involving an HRT bus occurred early Sunday morning.

Just before 8 a.m., Newport News police responded to a car accident on the 12600 block of Jefferson Avenue just north of Turnberry Blvd.

Officials believe that the driver of a Kia Rio, 20-year-old woman, fell asleep and crashed into the rear of a Honda Accord driven by a couple in their seventies. The Honda Accord then hit the back of an HRT bus waiting at the bus stop.

The HRT bus had six passengers who suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Kia Rio suffered no injuries. The wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the Honda Accord, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The husband has minor injuries.

The investigation is on-going as the Crash Reconstruction team looks into the incident.
