Newport News, Va. - The investigation into the reported sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl behind the Kohl's store at 551 Bland Boulevard in Newport News last November has revealed that the report is unfounded.

Newport News Police say the sexual assault never occurred, at the shopping center or anywhere else.

The sexual assault was reported on November 7th, according to police. The victim reported to the officer that she was walking to her vehicle and saw a man standing nearby smoking.

When she started to open her car door, the man grabbed her arm, forced her to the side of Kohl’s and sexually assaulted her.

She was able to get away and she ran to her vehicle where she called police.

A detailed description was given of the suspect and a sketch was released to the public shortly after the report. The victim was also interviewed by local media regarding the reported assault.

On March 2nd, the lead detective investigating the case received notice that DNA submitted for testing matched that of a white male from Newport News. The detective then conducted another interview with the victim.

As a result, the sexual assault report has been determined to be unfounded.
