Newport News, Va. – A Newport News woman has been charged with felony child neglect after a 15-month-old was found inside an overturned vehicle with no child safety seat suffering from minor injuries, police tell NewsChannel 3.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. on March 20, 2015, officers and medics were dispatched to a traffic crash in the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue involving an overturned vehicle.
The 15-month-old child was found inside the overturned vehicle. The child appeared to have received minor injuries in the crash.
Police say there was no child safety seat in the vehicle and that the child was being held by one of the passengers. The child was transported, by medics, to a local hospital where she was treated and released.
The child’s mother had left the child in the care of a relative who was also in the car at the time of the crash, according to police. The child’s mother was notified and responded to the hospital.
Child Protective Services was notified and responded to the hospital. The child was released to her mother, police say.
The driver, 25-year-old Crystal Renee Stokes-Newton of the 500 block of 22nd Street in Newport News, was taken into custody and charged with felony child neglect.
