Man dies after jumping off bridge at HRBT

Norfolk, Va. – A man has died as a result of jumping off the southwest bridge of the HRBT, according to State Police and Norfolk Police.

It happened on Friday, April 10. At 7:53 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a call concerning a person on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Coast Guard crews were notified by State Police, and responded to the scene. Crews launched a 25-foot long boat from Station Portsmouth, officials tell NewsChannel 3. Rescue units were sent to the area of the HRBT. The man was found unconscious. He was rescued from the water near the HRBT and transported to DePaul Hospital, where he later died, according to police.

At this time, there is no evidence of foul play. The incident remains under investigation; State Police are working to notify the next of kin.
