Woman found shot to death in Portsmouth identified

Portsmouth, Va. - Detectives with the Portsmouth Police Department Major Crimes Unit are investigating an afternoon shooting that has left one person dead.

Police received the 911 call at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Monday, requesting medical and police assistance to the 1900 block of Holladay Street for a woman who had been shot.

When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper part of her body. Medics pronounced her deceased at the scene.

The woman has been identified as 29-year-old Emily M. Spence.

"It doesn't make sense at all. It doesn't make sense at all," says a friend of Spence. "I'm still in shock because I just talked to her yesterday."

Detectives are still at the scene gathering evidence in this case.

Anyone with information about this incident or who may have seen or heard anything in the area is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Callers never have to give their name or testify in court. If a caller's tip leads to an arrest they could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
