Hertford, N.C. (WTKR) -The Coast Guard rescued two boaters Saturday night after their vessel capsized in the Albermarle Sound near Herford.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center responded to the report of two people overboard in the Albemarle Sound off Harvey Point around 7:25 p.m.

The helicopter crew found the distressed boaters clinging to their overturned boat around 8:10 p.m.

They were taken to the hospital after the aircrew lowered a rescued swimmer and pulled them into the rescue basket.

“We were very happy to locate these people, considering they had no visible lights, reflective material, nor signaling devices,” said Lt. Jared Carbajal, aircraft commander for the rescue.

The Coast Guard says they helicopter crew was able to locate the boaters thanks to cell phone communication between the survivors and Hertford County 911 dispatchers.
