Newport News, Va. - Police are investigating after a man was hit and killed by a train in Newport News on Monday night.
Calls came in at around 8:48 p.m. about the man being hit by the train at the Denbigh Boulevard underpass.
The victim has been identified 24-year-old Stanley Bernard Smith Jr. of Newport News.
An investigation revealed Smith walking with four other people along the tracks heading towards Old Courthouse Way. The group noticed a train was coming in their direction and everyone but Smith left the tracks. One of the people yelled at Smith to get off the tracks, but he was struck by the train.
Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident.
Newport News homicide detectives are working with CSX to investigate this incident.
