Virginia Beach, Va. (WTKR) - A girl was shot in an apparent drive-by shooting late Thursday night in the Lake Edward section of Virginia Beach.

Virginia Beach Police say the girl, who is under the age of 18, was outside of a home in the 800 block of Lake Edward Drive around 11:45 p.m. Thursday night when she was shot.

She was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover.

Neighbors report hearing multiple gunshots.

"Quite a few. Like 12 maybe. Rapid fire," explained neighbor Makeda Ashari.

As crime scene tape lingered Friday and a police officer patrolled the streets, other neighbors expressed their determination to make their community safer.

"That’s what’s needed – come together. More crime watch and not a matter of people standing around because the children need activities and 12 and 1 o'clock is not an activity," Garcia Ortiz told NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo.

Police have not released any suspect or motive information and the shooting remains under investigation.
