Two dead in head-on collision in rural Suffolk

UPDATE: The second victim in the crash has died. The victims have been identified as Mr. Dale Warren Saunders, age 59, of Corapeake, North Carolina (driver of the Toyota Tacoma), and Mr. Gail G. Ayers, age 60, also of Corapeake, North Carolina (driver of the Dodge Caliber).

Detours remain in place as the investigation continues.  Motorists traveling southbound on Carolina Road are being diverted onto Deer Forest Road, and motorists traveling northbound are being diverted onto Adams Swamp Road. 

The roadway is anticipated to remain closed for several more hours.  

Suffolk, Va. – One person was killed and another has sustained possible life-threatening injuries in Tuesday morning crash in Suffolk.

Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews were called to a head-on collision in the 5000 block of Carolina Road in the rural Whaleyville area of the city around 6:30 a.m.

The accident involved a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a Dodge Caliber SUV.

The two men driving the vehicles both had to be removed by Suffolk Fire & Rescue and EMS personnel. Both received emergency medical assessments and treatment but one of the drivers died at the scene. The other driver was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by Nightingale with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

The roadway will be closed for several hours as the investigation continues and the vehicles are removed from the roadway.

Detours will be in place.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.
