Norfolk, Va. – The newly-constructed Hampton Boulevard underpass near the Port of Virginia is set to open and plans are underway to shift traffic from the old Hampton Boulevard.
This underpass replaces the previous at-grade crossing which created significant delays for motorists and railway carriers. The underpass is the second phase of the Navy Triangle Improvement project that includes Fleet Recreational Park, the Intermodal Connector and Patriot’s Crossing.
Lane closures for milling and paving will take place May 15-June 19
- During this time, traffic heading southbound on Hampton Boulevard will not be able to make a left onto 90th Street. Traffic turning onto Hampton Boulevard from 90th Street will only be able to turn right, heading northbound.
- Greenbrier Avenue and Mapleshade Avenue access to Hampton Boulevard is closed through July 31, and traffic from the neighborhood is being detoured along Glen Myrtle Avenue and Beechwood Avenue.
May 18-June 5: Two lanes in each direction will be open at all times. Northbound traffic will still be on the old Hampton Boulevard, while southbound traffic will be using the new underpass.
June 5-June 8: Crews will close the two left northbound travel lanes on the existing Hampton Boulevard, as well as the two left lanes inside the southbound underpass, on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. One right lane in both directions will be open to traffic. All southbound lanes and the two northbound left lanes will open to traffic in the new underpass on Monday, June 8 before 5 a.m.
- During this time, traffic heading southbound on Hampton Boulevard will not be able to make a left onto 90th Street. Traffic turning onto Hampton Boulevard from 90th Street will only be able to turn right, heading northbound.
June 8-June 19: The northbound right lane inside the new underpass will remain closed to traffic for additional work. All lanes in the new underpass will be open to traffic on June 19.
June 19-July 31: Crews will finish work tying in Greenbrier Avenue, Mapleshade Avenue, and 90th Street to the new Hampton Boulevard, while also demolishing the old roadway.
