Update: Alton Chavis has pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder.  His sentencing is set for July 5th, 2016. If the judge accepts the plea agreement, Chavis could get 25 years in prison.

The judge will withhold a decision on accepting the agreement pending a review of the pre-sentence report.

The defendant is still in custody.

Virginia Beach, Va. – Neighbors in the Ocean Gate Apartment Complex are on high alert after hearing that a child was killed in her home earlier this month.

According to Virginia Beach Police, the girl was killed between 9 p.m. on May 7th and 3 a.m. on May 8th.  Police arrested her father, Alton Chavis, 29, on May 9th. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Although the killing happened a few weeks ago, neighbors are just finding out about the news.

“We are friends with all the neighbors and the whole community is pretty close,” said Aliayah Burnt, a neighbor. “We never really had any problems so it’s shocking that someone was murdered here.”

Chavis remains in the Virginia Beach jail. His next court date is scheduled for May 27.
