Norfolk, Va. - The American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia is helping children in Hampton Roads stay safe this summer by offering free water safety lessons.

The Virginia Water Safety Committee of the American Red Cross is offering the hour and a half lessons to children ages 4-12.

The swim lessons are held in memory of Mary Helen Thomas, a community leader. Thomas is known for promoting water safety and learn-to-swim programs in Hampton Roads. The Red Cross describes her as an "inspiration and a hero" who broke down racial barriers in the 1960's.

The learn to swim days are being offered the weekend of June 13 and June 14 at recreation and aquatic centers in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

At each site, there will also be raffles for swim lesson scholarships and other prizes.

To register for the lessons, call the location of your choice before June 10, 2015.
