UPDATE: Power has been restored to customers in Newport News and Hampton, according to Dominion Virginia Power.
Newport News, Va. -- Many are without power in Newport News Monday morning.
According to Dominion Virginia Power, the problem is a failed underground cable around 35th Street and Jefferson Avenue.
The outage started at 7:36 AM and affected 1,077 customers in the downtown area and Copeland Park.
Part of the Newport News Naval Shipyard is affected, along with some customers in Hampton off Aberdeen Road.
Crews are on the scene working to make repairs. They are working on switching as many customers as possible to an alternate source of power.
Power has been restored to 348 customers so far. It is estimated that restoration for remaining customers will be around 10 AM.
