Man arrested after allegedly pepper spraying two others in Newport News

Newport News, Va. - A 47-year-old Williamsburg man was arrested in Newport News on Friday, July 10th after an apparent altercation with several other men near the parking lot at the Wawa in the 700 block of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

Newport News Police were called to the Wawa at approximately 8:15 a.m.

When officers arrived, they met with 47-year-old Thom Polychronopoulos. He had a swollen left eye and a bloody nose.

Polychronopoulos told officers that he was in his truck waiting on a storage unit gate when another man walked passed him and “mouthed off” at him. Polychronopoulos says he exited his vehicle and pushed the man due to feeling threatened.

Another man reportedly came to his friend’s aid when he was pushed.

Polychronopoulos then allegedly pepper sprayed both men.

The two men began hitting Polychronopoulos with their fists after they were sprayed causing the injuries to his face.

Polychronopoulos then retrieved one of his dogs from the vehicle because he felt threatened.

Some bystanders in the area were able to separate all involved parties.

The other men left the scene before police arrived.

An officer responded to a local hospital to meet with one of the victims, but he had already been discharged upon arrival.

After the officer’s investigation, felony warrants were obtained on Polychronopoulos for Malicious Assault by Acid/Explosive/Fire.
