Portsmouth, Va. – A Portsmouth Deputy is recovering after accidentally shooting herself in the leg on Wednesday.
According to Lt. Cherry with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s department, she was going to the jail to conduct a search on a female prisoner. After her search, she was returning to her vehicle and securing her weapon back to its holster when it discharged.
The bullet went inside her leg and exited her thigh. She was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Portsmouth Police and Sheriff’s Department internal affairs are conducting an investigation.
