Giraffe born at Virginia Zoo

Posted

Norfolk, Va. – It’s a boy! A male Masai giraffe was born Thursday, July 23rd at the Virginia Zoo.

The giraffe is the fifth calf born to mother Imara and father Billy. He weighed 152 pounds and was 75 inches tall (about 6’3”!)

A few hours after he was born, the calf was able to stand and walk. He will begin to explore his surroundings under the watchful eye of his mother over the next few weeks.

“We are keeping a close watch on mom and baby,” said Dr. Amanda Guthrie. “So far the baby looks healthy, Imara is an experienced and attentive mother and we’re optimistic that she’ll do a great job.”

The public can see mother and baby in the indoor giraffe exhibit in the Africa area of the zoo.
