Sections of I-264 to close starting Wednesday for sign installation

Portsmouth, Va. – Starting Wednesday, crews will close down the I-264 in Portsmouth for overhead sign installations related to the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Extension.  Detours will be in place to help drivers get around the closures.

The I-264 closure schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 30:

  • I-264 West/Downtown Tunnel: This closure will occur concurrently with the scheduled I-264 West Downtown Tunnel nightly full closure.
    • Full closure from Downtown Tunnel to the Frederick Boulevard off-ramp from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning. Effingham Street on-ramps will be closed.
  • I-264 West/Frederick Boulevard:
    • Two right lanes just beyond the Frederick Boulevard ramp closed from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning. Frederick Boulevard on-ramps will remain open, and the left lane will be open to traffic.

Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2:

  • I-264 West/Effingham Street:
    • Friday and Saturday, July 31 and August 1: Full intermittent traffic stoppages from Effingham Street to Frederick Boulevard from 8 p.m. each night until 8 a.m. the following morning. Each stoppage can last up to 20 minutes.
    • Sunday August 2: Full intermittent traffic stoppages from Effingham Street to Frederick Boulevard from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. Each stoppage can last up to 20 minutes.
  • I-264 East/Portsmouth Boulevard: This closure will occur concurrently with the scheduled I-264 East Downtown Tunnel weekend closure.
    • Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1: Full closure from Portsmouth Boulevard to the Downtown Tunnel from 8 p.m. each night until 8 a.m. the following morning.
    • Sunday, August 2: Full closure from Portsmouth Boulevard to the Downtown Tunnel from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday, August 3.
