Newport News, Va. – A 28-year-old man is in jail with no bond after officials say he set an apartment on fire while someone was inside.
On August 1, 2015 at 1:36 a.m., crews were called out to an apartment fire on Riverlands Drive.
Officials say they could not see a fire from the outside of the building, but they discovered small fire had already been put out inside. There was still smoke visible.
The damage was about 250.00.
No one was injured.
Officials say the cause of the fire was suspicious and after the investigation, Sharif L. Byrd was charged with arson of an occupied dwelling and attempted homicide.
Police have not released any other information about this case.
