Portsmouth, Va. - Portsmouth Police say a man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after he was shot Sunday evening.

Dispatch received the 911 call at 7:22 p.m. for a shooting in the 2200 block of Elm Ave.

Police say the victim was shot in the head.

A friend of the victim tells NewsChannel 3 that he was helping someone outside of a store along Elm Avenue, just a few yards from his home, when he was shot.

"He's got a five-year-old son, he's an excellent father, he worked," says Lashawnda Redd. "I don't know why anybody would do this to him."

Police did not have any suspect information. The investigation is on-going.

At this time, detectives say they do not have a suspect or motive in this case and are asking anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
