Newport News, Va. – A man accused of shooting another man in the head during an attempted robbery is now behind bars.

On September 1st, police arrested 19-year-old Everett Laray Byrd who was identified as one of the shooters back in August.

Another suspect involved is still on the loose.

On July 14th, 2015, officers were called out to the Colony Road and Warwick Blvd. area.

They found a 24-year-old man who had been shot in the head.

He was in the area to visit a woman when two men approached him. He was shot while trying to get away.

The victim was driving a blue Infinity at the time and after he was shot, he ran off the road, hit a pole, metal fence and a tree before the vehicle came to a stop.

Witnesses say the man was the only occupant inside of the vehicle. After the crash, he got out of the car and walked towards an apartment building.

Officers say they found what appeared to be bullet holes in the front windshield of the vehicle.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Byrd is now facing charges including robbery, malicious assault, maliciously shoot/throw, shooting in a public place, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, and attempts to commit non-capital felonies.
