1 killed, several injured in helicopter training exercise at Camp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune, NC – A service member was killed and several others were injured during a helicopter training exercise Wednesday night at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (HMH-464), Marine Aircraft group-29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based at MCAS New River experienced a hard landing around 9:00 p.m. while conducting training at Camp Lejeune.

One service member was airlifted to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and pronounced deceased at the hospital. Seven service members were treated at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. Six of them were evaluated and have been scheduled for release. The seventh was admitted and is stable.

Three additional service members were transported to Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, NC where they are all reportedly stable.

One service member was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
