Kids in Hampton get free back to school haircuts

Hampton, Va. (WTKR) - Dozens of kids in Hampton and Newport News were treated to a free hair cut or hair style on Labor Day ahead of the new school year.

Lakkia White organized the #GiveBack campaign.

This year White and a handful of her co-workers treated students to the free hair cut or new hair style at the Hair Envy salon on W. Mercury Blvd. in Hampton.

"I know how important it is to have a fresh haircut, a fresh hair style. It does a lot for their self-esteem when they go back their first day their absolute best," White told NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo.

In addition to the haircuts, kids were also treated to free hot dogs and popcorn and were given bags full of school supplies.

"Pens and paper. Little composition notebooks, rulers, crayons. Whatever they need for the grade level they are going to so that they can at least have something to go back with on their very first day. Take some of the stress off the parents," White commented.

This is the seventh year White has organized the #GiveBack day.
