Fulton County, Ga. — A dog that was left for dead and found tied to a Georgia church is recovering after being rescued by animal control officials.

The dog, named Odysseus, is now at an emergency veterinary hospital and in the care of the Angels Among Us Pet Rescue Mission. He weighed just 28 pounds when he was found.

Odysseus is estimated to be about 2 years old. The facility is asking for donations to be made on the dog’s behalf to help pay for the costs. The next several days will be crucial to his recovery.

“Odysseus is currently on a feeding plan to help him stay on the right track and get his body the nutrients he so desperately needs. He’s eating very well too! And luckily, he is heartworm negative!!! He’s tested negative for various other diseases as well so this is great news!!! He’s just extremely malnourished!” the group posted to Facebook on Monday.

It is unclear who owned Odysseus before he was left tied to the church.
