Many local events scheduled for this weekend (October 3-4) here in Hampton Roads have been canceled or rescheduled due to the forecasted impacts from Hurricane Joaquin.

Here’s what we know so far:

Donald Trump Virginia Beach Campaign Rally

“Due to Hurricane Joaquin and the declared state of emergency in the great state of Virginia we have postponed Friday’s Rally. Mr. Trump stated, “While we were expecting 10,000 people based on demand, and it would have been a happening, everyone’s safety is of far more importance to me. We will reschedule the event very soon and I look forward to being there.”‘

State Fair of Virginia

Due to the threat of heavy rain and possible severe weather, the State Fair of Virginia will close at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1 and will not reopen for the remainder of the 2015 season.

“Safety is the fair’s No. 1 priority for our customers, vendors, exhibitors and workers,” said Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe, vice president of operations for The Meadow Event Park. “We feel it is important to respect the governor’s state of emergency declaration, and we realize that our law enforcement and emergency medical service personnel may be needed elsewhere during this impending storm.”

Patrons who purchased but have not yet used single-day, admission tickets and season passes will be able to exchange them via mail for a single-day admission ticket for the 2016 State Fair of Virginia, which will be held Sept. 30 through Oct. 9. Unused Ride Wristband vouchers can be exchanged via mail for a wristband voucher for the 2016 State Fair.

To receive the 2016 tickets or vouchers, ticketholders should mail their unused 2015 tickets, passes and vouchers to: State Fair of Virginia, Attention: Ticket Office, P.O. Box 130, Doswell, VA 23047, along with the guest’s name, address, telephone number and email address. A confirmation email will be sent to guests once the information is received. All returned tickets, passes or wristband vouchers must be postmarked by Oct. 30.

Newport News Fall Festival Cancelled

The 42nd Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4th has been cancelled. It will not be rescheduled and vendors will receive refunds.

“It is a disappointing but necessary decision to make to cancel an event that is so popular with citizens of Newport News and of the entire area,” said Assistant City Manager Alan Archer. “The festival site in Newport News Park is primarily dirt and grass and the significant amount of rain projected from the low pressure system will cause the area to be unsafe for festival visitors, vendors and staff.”

Current forecasts call for up to 10” of rain from now through the weekend, even ahead of Hurricane Joaquin should it make landfall sometime Sunday or later. While there is still a significant amount of uncertainty in terms of the forecast for Hurricane Joaquin, the low pressure system that is approaching the area from the southwest is threatening very heavy rainfall amounts.
