Newport News, Va. – An argument between two people led to an officer shooting a pit bull in the 700 block of 31st Street, according to officials.

Communications received a call about an argument between two women Sunday afternoon.

Police say the two women were inside of the home fighting and a third woman was outside. When the officer arrived, the door was opened and the dog was let out of the house. They do not know if an adult or a child inside let the dog out.

McPherson says that as the officer was walking into the residence the dog lunged towards him. That’s when he fired his duty weapon and struck the dog.

The pit bull was euthanized due to the extent of the injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
