Kill Devil Hills, NC – A 12-year-old girl on a bicycle has passed away after being hit by a vehicle in Kill Devil Hills on November 23rd, according a post on her father’s Facebook page.

The woman driving the vehicle that hit her has now been charged.

Police say they were called to the intersection of Veterans Drive and Ocean Bay Boulevard around 4:30 p.m.

The investigation revealed that a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox traveling west on Ocean Bay Boulevard ran through a red light at the intersection of Veterans Drive and hit Bri Blumenthal, who was crossing the road on her bicycle.

Kill Devil Hills Police, Fire, EMS and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. First responders arrived within one minute of the intial call.

Blumenthal suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown via Dare MedFlight to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.   She was on life support in the Intensive Care Unit with a large amount of brain swelling.

“She was peaceful and surrounded by loved ones when she succumbed to her injuries. I want you all to know this is not the end of her journey,” Scotty Blumenthal’s post said.

Police say they do not believe alcohol, distraction, speed or drugs were a factor in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle, Doris Younts, has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and failure to stop at a steady red light.

She is scheduled to appear in court on February 16th, 2016.
