Suspect in Newport News shooting dies from injuries suffered in fiery crash during police chase

Newport News, Va. - The suspect in a Thanksgiving night shooting in Newport News has died after a fiery crash during a police chase on I-64 at Jefferson Ave.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. police on Robinson Drive heard gunshots, and calls were received at police communications about a shooting at the Pequeno Apartments.

The officers found a 26-year-old resident who had been shot in the upper body. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

While investigating the scene witnesses pointed out a suspect to the officers, which led to a vehicle chase onto I-64 that ended when the man crashed into a jersey barrier near Exit 255, causing his vehicle to catch fire.

Police pulled 56-year-old Samuel Lowell Vass from the vehicle and he was taken to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead from his injuries shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Police say the shooting is domestic related.  Vass is the uncle of the victim.

The crash closed one westbound and all eastbound lanes Thursday night.
