Interstate 264 in Portsmouth will be completely closed overnight on December 6th and December 7th so a pedestrian bridge can be installed near Frederick Boulevard.

This work requires a complete closure of I-264 in both directions between Frederick Boulevard and Portsmouth Boulevard from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning for the safe placement of the structure.

Due to the nature of construction, these dates are subject to change and are weather dependent.

I-264 Detour:

  • I-264 East Detour: Motorists traveling on I-264 East towards Norfolk will detour onto Portsmouth Boulevard and back onto I-264 at Frederick Boulevard.
  • I-264 West Detour: Motorists traveling on I-264 West towards Suffolk will detour onto Frederick Boulevard and back onto I-264 at Portsmouth Boulevard.

Additionally, the Frederick Boulevard on-ramp to I-264 West and the Portsmouth Boulevard on-ramp to I-264 East will be closed in coordination with the interstate closure.

The old pedestrian bridge was removed in March 2014 for widening of the interstate to accommodate the new Martin Luther King (MLK) Extension.

The new structure will be wider and longer than the previous raised walkway, and will provide additional safety features for pedestrians including increased lighting and access.
