Norfolk, Va. – A Norfolk father is in custody and facing several charges after an incident with a minor.
Robert Vela was arrested for sexual battery, assault and battery, forcible sodomy, and statutory burglary. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 14.
His wife, Amy Vela, was arrested in May after reportedly leaving six children home alone while she played Bingo.
Police, Fire Rescue, and Child Protective Services responded to the home and found six children, ranging in age from 5-months to 10-years, alone at the home.
None of the children were injured.
Norfolk Police say they received a phone call around 7:00 p.m. reporting several young children alone inside of a home in the 1000 block of Denhart Street.
Amy Vela, 35, was located an hour and a half later at an area Bingo hall.
Amy Vela’s original charges of six counts of felony child neglect were reduced to misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Her case is pending under finding an assignment.
