Newport News mother accused of driving while intoxicated with 4 kids in car

Newport News, Va. – A woman has been arrested for driving while intoxicated with her four children sitting in the vehicle without seat belts.

On December 19 around 10:15 p.m., officers saw a four door sedan being driven without headlights on 36th Street.

Officers stopped the car and noticed that Janay Cooke, 27,  appeared to be intoxicated.  They also saw four children ages 1,3,5 and 7 sitting unrestrained in the sedan.

Police found marijuana and a prescription drug, for which she had no prescription, on Cooke’s person.

Cooke was arrested with possession of marijuana, possession of a schedule I or II controlled substance, first offense driving while intoxicated, four counts of contribute to the delinquency of a minor, driving without a license and three counts of not using a child restraint device.

The children are in the custody of their grandmother.
