Elizabeth City, N.C. - A family of six is out of their home after a fire ripped through it just days before Christmas.

The fire happened Tuesday on White Street.

"It just hurt because I work so hard for the little bit I got," said Diane Perry, who lived at the home.

Perry was at work at the time. Her boss came to tell her the house was on fire. "I just went out the back door and started hollering and then when I got around there I was still hollering," said Perry. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

Perry didn't have renter's insurance and most of her belongings were lost to the flames and smoke.

"This ain't never happened to me, but you never know what's going to happen," she said.

Firefighters say the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross is helping the family. They're still working to figure out their next steps.
