Newport News, Va. – If you usually travel northbound on Chestnut Avenue, it appears that you’ll have to take a different route for a few months.
Officials say northbound Chestnut Avenue has been closed where it crosses Newmarket Creek, which is between James Drive and Faubus Drive since December 30.
During a routine inspection on Tuesday, inspectors discovered that one of the four very large concrete box culverts that support the road over the creek have significant spalling (when concrete peels off) on the ceilings.
Steel reinforcements, which provide strength for the roof to support the roadway, are exposed.
A detour has been set up to Roanoke Avenue.
The city anticipates the northbound side of Chestnut Avenue to be closed for about four months until repairs have been made.
The culverts under the southbound lanes are not in such a state and therefore the southbound lanes remain open.
