Newport News, Va. – Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate found hanging in his jail cell, according to police.

Police communications was notified of the hanging on January 5 around 2:30 a.m.
According to investigators, a deputy making safety checks found the inmate, 41-year-old Eric Neer, unconscious in his cell.
The deputy called for help and Sheriff’s Office personnel began CPR. Newport News Fire Department medics also continued lifesaving efforts before Neer was taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead around 3:30 a.m.
Neer was arrested on child sex crimes in September 2015.
The Newport News Sheriff’s Office and the Newport News Police Department’s homicide squad have begun two separate investigations, which is standard procedure.
The investigating is ongoing. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
