Virginia Beach, Va. - A tractor trailer crashed off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Wednesday afternoon and the driver was rescued from the water.

The Coast Guard and the Virginia Beach Marine Patrol pulled the driver, 33-year-old Matthew Killmon of Wachapreague, out of the tractor trailer from the water conscious and alive.

Killmon was transported to Wise Point on the Eastern Shore, then was flown via Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Afterward, rescue boat crewmember Paul Sigwart described the rescue.

"It was definitely a unique situation being on the water doing patient treatment while riding in the boat It was definitely a unique experience but it’s what we were trained to do.”

The truck was hauling a load of soybeans for Coastal Ag Transport.

In a statement over the phone, a spokeswoman for Coastal Ag Trasport says, "Our hopes and prayers are with the driver and family. Everything else we will take as it comes."
