Elizabeth City, N.C. – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has caught escaped inmate Heather Burton in Elizabeth City, according to Elizabeth City Police Captain Young.

Police responded to Peartree Road in Elizabeth City around noon. Burton was found hiding under the bed.

Burton escaped Washington County Hospital while she was being X-rayed on Wednesday morning, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff John Barnes says Burton hurt herself when she fell in a courthouse stairwell after a court appearance and was taken to the hospital. He said she stole a black Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck after escaping from the hospital.

Burton is originally from Elizabeth City, but has pending charges in Pitt County. She was in court in Washington County on a probation violation offense.

She is currently in jail in Elizabeth City and awaiting extradition in Washington County.
