Mathews Co. Deputies investigating suspicious death of Gloucester Co. woman

Mathews County, Va. – Deputies are investigating the suspicious death of a 41-year-old Gloucester woman after her body was found in a wooded area on Sunday.

The woman’s husband reported her missing around 1:45 p.m. after she left her home on Hickory Ford Road and didn’t return.

The husband had concerns about the woman’s mental state.

Virginia State Police and the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office searched for the woman and her 2009 Nissan Altima.

Deputies found the woman’s car parked at a property owned by the couple in the 4400 block of North River Road around 5 p.m.

Officials from the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office, Gloucester Sheriff’s Office, Gloucester K-9 and the Virginia State Police searched the wooded area on the property. Deputies found the woman’s dead body approximately 400 yards off of North River Road.

The woman’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond to determine cause of death.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this case. The preliminary finding from the Medical Examiner’s Office and evidence found at the scene indicate no foul play.
