Man arrested in Suffolk robbery investigation

Suffolk, Va. - Police and CSI were on the scene of an ongoing investigation at a Super 8 on Main Street Tuesday.

Police received information that 23-year-old Kevon Hawkins was involved inthe robbery of a 7-Eleven on January 10 and a Family Dollar on January 7.

Police received information that Hawkins was possibly staying at a hotel downtown with a woman.

As detectives were following up on the investigation, they learned that the woman with Hawkins was a guest at the Super 8 motel.

A SWAT team was called to the scene just before 10 a.m.

Officers came to the door of the room registered in the woman's name, knocked once and got no response.

When they knocked the second time, officers say they heard what sounded like a bullet being loaded into a gun.

The woman left the room unharmed before officers heard several gunshots fired in the room.

Hawkins crawled out of the room a few minutes later and was taken into custody.

Police say he had at least one self-inflicted gunshot wound underneath his chin area.

Officials found a gun in the hotel room.

He received assessment and treatment by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel and was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.

Hawkins has outstanding warrants from Suffolk for Attempted Malicious Wounding, Possession of Stolen Firearm, 5 counts of Possess Firearm by Convicted Felon, 3 counts of Robbery, 4 counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, 3 counts of Wearing a Mask in Public, Burglary, Grand Larceny, 2 counts of Discharge Firearm in Occupied Building, Obstructing Justice and Resisting Arrest.

He also has outstanding warrants in North Carolina for Kidnapping.

Hawkins is currently being investigated for multiple business robberies and residential burglaries.
