Elizabeth City, N.C. – Police have arrested a man in connection with an attempted robbery.
The victim, a 74-year-old woman, told police the suspect got into her car at The Zoom In Gas Station on Main Street Extended and asked her to drive him to the Gateway Bank on Ehringhaus Street.
The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Brett Ryan Cote.
The woman agreed to take Cote to the bank.
When they arrived, Cote told the victim to get out of the car and get him money. The victim refused.
Cote said he didn’t want to hurt her and implied he had a weapon in his pocket. The woman reached for her keys and Cote grabbed her hand and took the keys, causing a minor injury to her hand.
The victim got out of her car and Cote drove away in her white 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Officers saw the Jeep traveling on US 17 North around 2:30 p.m. They pulled Cote over on US 17 North at Hathaway Drive and arrested him.
Cote was charged with attempted armed robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle and assault inflicting serious injury.
He was processed and taken to Albemarle District Jail under a $315,000 secured bond.
