Nurse at Hampton VA hospital convicted of sexually assaulting patient

Newport News, Va. – A former nurse in the emergency department of the Hampton Veteran’s Administration Hospital was convicted Friday on federal charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault and making false statements to a federal agent.

Juan M. Lopez, 52, of Virginia Beach was indicted on the charges in July of 2015.

According to court records, Lopez was working as a nurse in the emergency department of the hospital.

The victim, who suffers from PTSD related to a prior military rape and two traumatic brain injuries, sought treatment in the ER for a leg injury.

Lopez administered morphine to the victim against her wishes and while she was under the influence, Lopez sexually assaulted her multiple times.

When he was questioned by federal agents five days later, he lied.

After his trial, Lopez was taken into custody. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison when he is sentenced on May 19th, 2016.
