Frederick County, Va. – A tractor-trailer loaded with 33 cattle ran off the left side while traveling north on I-81 and overturned in the median.

Virginia State Police responded to the crash just before 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

The male driver was treated at the scene for injuries and charged with reckless driving.

Six cattle escaped from the damaged trailer. A few are still being rounded up by troopers. Six cattle did not survive the crash.

A local veterinarian responded to the scene to asses the conditions of the cattle injured in the crash. The veterinarian is advising state police on how to best manage the scene.

The northbound lanes of I-81 remain closed and traffic is being detoured around the crash.
