Woman charged with DUI after crashing into Newport News school bus

Newport News, Va. – A Newport News City Public Schools bus was involved in a crash with a car on Tuesday afternoon at Jefferson Avenue and Oyster Point wavy fb school bus crashRoad.

According to Newport News Police, they initially received reports that a car had been involved in a separate crash in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Thimble Shoals Boulevard. After that crash, the car reportedly left the scene and traveled to Oyster Point Road where the driver failed to stop at a red light and hit the bus.

There were no students on board the bus and no one on the bus was injured.

The female driver of the car was transported to a local hospital with appear to be non-life threatening injuries.

She has been identified as 37-year-old Angela Hope Charles. She has been charged with 2nd Offense DUI, Refusal to Take Blood/Breath Test, Driving While Suspended 3rd or Subsequent, Reckless Driving, and Possession of Schedule 4 Narcotics.

Newport News Fire Department crews responded due to fluids leaking from the vehicle.

Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
